Daliworks (CEO Soonho Lee) announced on the 1st that ‘Thingplus’, its Internet of Things (IoT) cloud platform, has received ‘Good Software (GS)’ certification from the Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA). Daliworks is the first company to receive this nationally accredited certification in the field. With the TTA certification, Thingplus has been registered on the Public Procurement Service’s Nara Marketplace, opening the way for supply to the public sector market. The Public Procurement Service requires public institutions to give priority to GS-certified products when purchasing software. Additional benefits include exemption from performance testing when obtaining performance certification from the Small and Medium Business Administration, bonus points in screenings for designation as a military service exception company, and bonus points in technical proposal evaluations for e-government projects.

Thingplus (Thing+) is Software as a Service (SaaS) for Internet of Things (IoT) application services. For service partners looking to deliver an IoT experience to their users, it provides not only the applications running on cloud infrastructure but also the embedded middleware and client applications, helping them launch services quickly and easily. Drawing on the experience of developing Thingplus, this article looks at what to consider when developing cloud-based application services.

Barun Electronics (CEOs Tae-sub Kim and Se-jong Lim) announced on the 6th that it has exchanged a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Internet of Things platform company Daliworks to build an IoT ecosystem. Barun Electronics will develop and produce hardware embedded with short-range communication technology for the IoT and sensors that detect temperature, humidity, carbon dioxide, and fine dust levels. Daliworks will cooperate by providing its cloud platform for the Internet of Things. The two companies plan to develop and combine a variety of hardware and software. Even before exchanging the MOU, they had already created synergy by jointly developing IoT devices.

In the summer of 2013, Soonho Lee, who had only recently founded Daliworks, received a call from an acquaintance living in Brazil. A local cold storage operator had suffered tens of millions of won in damages when a warehouse breakdown melted his ice cream, and the request was whether Daliworks could solve the problem. Lee, who was then developing a cloud-based Internet of Things (IoT) remote management tool, sensed that a golden opportunity had arrived. He completed the technology early last year, linked the Brazilian customer’s 10 cold-storage warehouses and 50 refrigerated trucks through IoT, connected them to the Amazon cloud, and now manages them from his office in Chungmuro, Seoul. Cold storage facilities in Brazil are managed by just one or two employees in a small office on the other side of the world. Within about a year of starting the business, hundreds of customers in Brazil alone had entrusted their warehouse management to the company.

Ten Korean companies took part in an overseas Internet of Things exhibition and came away with one letter of intent and ten memoranda of understanding. Venture companies that are still just startups are making their mark in IoT, a promising new market of the future. The Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning and the Korea Internet and Security Agency announced on the 24th that they showcased the technologies and services of 10 promising Korean IoT SMEs on the world stage at ‘Smart City Expo 2014’, held in Barcelona, Spain. The Smart City Expo brings together key figures from 50 cities across Europe, Asia, Africa, and beyond, along with some 400 cities, 41 national delegations, and 232 companies, exhibiting the IoT technologies and services needed to build sustainable and efficient urban environments.
