SK Telecom announced on the 10th that it has launched ‘ThingPlug’, an integrated platform that helps anyone easily develop IoT (Internet of Things) services and apply them to everyday life.
ThingPlug is built on international IoT standards, making it easy to connect with devices and applications. It is available through a dedicated web portal (https://sandbox.sktiot.com) and offers a ‘service platform’ for companies and developers, along with a ‘DIY development environment’ where users can build the IoT services they want.
Based on the SDK (Software Development Kit), developers can purchase motherboards, sensors, and other components to build their own IoT devices and services. Once development is complete, they can register them on the web portal and put them to use immediately.
ThingPlug also provides a cloud-based development service environment, eliminating the cost of building separate servers.
SK Telecom has applied the IoT network technologies it holds as a mobile carrier to ThingPlug, including IPv6 support and data transmission over a secure network. To expand the platform’s service capabilities, the company has also been conducting joint development with Daliworks, an IoT service platform company.
In addition, SK Telecom has been carrying out the Mobius project together with the Korea Electronics Technology Institute (KETI) since 2011 as a national project of the Ministry of Science, ICT and Future Planning, and the outcomes of that project have been incorporated into ThingPlug.
SK Telecom also plans to apply a ThingPlug-based IoT platform to the Busan Smart City testbed, which is scheduled to be established around the end of the year. A developer forum event and an IoT service contest are also being prepared for the second half of the year.
Jin-sung Choi, Head of SK Telecom’s Corporate R&D Center, said, “We plan to introduce services that innovate the value of customers’ daily lives across service areas that go beyond telecommunications. Through ThingPlug, we will enhance convenience and cost-effectiveness for customers, while developing a variety of data-driven businesses and growing an open ecosystem in which we collaborate with partners both within and outside our industry.”
