As digital transformation accelerates across society, the cloud is becoming the default system, and SW companies are diving into the SaaS market on that foundation. Korea’s leading SW companies and the Korea Software Industry Association have declared this the first year of the SaaS transition and are actively pushing related initiatives.

What Is SaaS?

SaaS (Software as a Service) means software delivered as a service: a service accessed through a specific app or web portal, a complete software solution provided to the end users of a client organization. It is a model in which software installed in the cloud can be used with nothing more than an internet connection, without building or installing physical infrastructure such as PCs or servers.

Installation is simple, and updates and fixes happen instantly, an advantage for maintenance as well. And because payment is by subscription or by usage, billed monthly or annually, providers earn recurring revenue while users face low upfront costs and can even choose their own application replacement cycle.

Concrete Examples of SaaS

Looking first from the perspective of individual users, iCloud, Google Drive, and Naver’s MYBOX, which many people use to store and manage photos, videos, and other content, are flagship examples of SaaS. If you have used a web-based mail service such as Gmail, you have already experienced the SaaS model. So are the wildly popular OTT (Over-the-Top) services such as Netflix sweeping the world today: rather than owning the content, you use as much of the internet’s vast content as you want through cloud infrastructure on a subscription basis.

When you use these services, you typically log in to your account over the internet in a web browser. The mail software lives on the service provider’s network, and your messages are stored there as well. You can access your mail and stored messages through a web browser on a computer or any internet-connected device. The examples above are services provided free for personal use.

For organizations, productivity apps such as business messengers, mail, collaboration, video conferencing, and calendar services can be rented, along with sophisticated business applications such as CRM (customer relationship management), ERP (enterprise resource planning), and document management. Payment for these apps is by subscription or by level of usage.

What Do SaaS Apps Have in Common?

Thingplus IoT services, Disney +, Google Workspace, Dropbox, Zoom.. what these SaaS applications (apps) have in common is that they are all services built on the cloud. The cloud is what grew up alongside SaaS. Cloud services, or cloud computing, mean being able to use as much computing resource as you need, anytime and anywhere, over the internet.

It is easy to think of the cloud simply as a service for storing files and content, like Naver Cloud or Google Drive. But storage is only a small fraction of what the cloud offers. Cloud services include offerings that let individuals use software on the web, like Naver Cloud, but there are also services that lease IT infrastructure such as servers and network equipment to companies, and services that lend out core IT technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the Internet of Things (IoT), blockchain, and facial recognition from a platform, much like renting goods.

Innovation Led by the Cloud

The cloud is the essential infrastructure cited as a keyword in the shifting economic and industrial landscape of the untact (contactless) era. It is also a core reason the global economy and business activity could keep going after the pandemic. For companies, cloud adoption started out as an option for cutting costs and raising efficiency; now, with digital transformation an absolute imperative for business, it has become a requirement. That is why the cloud industry has been growing so fast of late.

Above all, the cloud serves as the platform that fuses the core technologies of the fourth industrial revolution, including IoT, AI, big data, and 5th-generation mobile networks (5G). More recently, as COVID-19 expanded untact services such as remote work, contactless customer service, online video services (OTT), and online lectures, the cloud’s importance has been emphasized all the more. The reason services built on these advanced IT technologies can support the “contactless society” without strain is that the cloud sits at their center.

The global cloud market is already expanding at speed. According to Gartner, the US IT research and consulting advisory firm, the global public cloud market is projected to grow at an average of about 14.5% a year from 2019 to 2022. By 2022 the market is expected to reach 364.1 billion dollars (about 426 trillion won), up 50% from 242.7 billion dollars in 2019, with software as a service (SaaS) taking the largest share of all services at 38.6%.

The Relationship Between IoT and the Cloud

Q. What is the relationship between IoT and cloud computing?

A. Cloud computing is the pathway for transmitting and storing IoT data.

Q. What is the difference between IoT and cloud computing?

A. IoT connects nearby smart devices to a network and extracts data for analysis and decision-making, while cloud computing is the technology that delivers hosted services over the internet. IoT also enables data collection from many devices, and cloud computing provides the tools and services needed to develop IoT applications.

Combining IoT and the Cloud

The Internet of Things (IoT) and cloud computing are two distinct but closely connected technologies. When the two are combined, they become a powerful innovation that will keep changing how devices interact with one another and how data is stored, managed, and consumed.

IoT has the potential to transform companies by enabling smarter products and services, gathering data that will shape business decisions, and allowing business models to change in ways that drive growth and expansion. As a pillar of the fourth industrial revolution, IoT will keep changing how people live and how companies interact with employees, customers, and assets. And cloud computing will be at the core of everything IoT delivers.

IoT and cloud computing aim to improve the efficiency of everyday work and maintain a complementary relationship. IoT generates huge volumes of data, while cloud computing can move that data. Many cloud providers take advantage of this with pay-as-you-go models in which customers pay only for the resources they use. Cloud hosting as a service also adds value for IoT startups by lowering overall costs through economies of scale.

Just as cloud computing is built on the principles of speed and scale, IoT applications are built on the principles of mobility and wide-area networking. The key, then, is to make the most of the cloud-IoT combination and create cloud-based IoT applications. It is no exaggeration to say that IoT’s success depends on partnership.

The Relationship Between IoT and the Cloud

The interrelationship between IoT and cloud computing is a critical factor in IoT’s growth. Simply put, the cloud provides the connectivity IoT devices need, and much more. In practice, IoT devices rely on the cloud to store critical data in one place so it can be managed and distributed in real time. Here are several reasons companies should use the cloud to get the most value from their IoT devices.

1. Scalability and Deployment

The cloud can help companies overcome the significant technical and financial challenges that come with implementing IoT solutions. With the cloud, there is no need to set up physical servers, configure networks, build databases, manage connections, or handle myriad other infrastructure tasks, so spinning up virtual servers, launching databases, and creating the data pipelines an IoT solution needs can all be done quickly and easily.

An in-house IoT network infrastructure demands substantial hardware and time-consuming configuration before everything works properly, but implementing a cloud-based IoT system is far easier. Cloud services also make it easier to manage the life cycle of remote devices, typically providing device monitoring and management capabilities along with tools that automate firmware and software updates.

2. Interoperability and Data Mobility

Data stored and processed in the cloud can be accessed from anywhere in the world without additional infrastructure or networking. Data can be collected remotely, in real time, from any device, anytime and anywhere.

In addition, linking or integrating data generated by IoT devices with other data resources becomes seamless. The cloud integrates applications and brings all of these data sources together completely so they can be analyzed regardless of origin. Going further, the cloud streamlines how companies integrate their IoT solutions with other intelligent products developed by third parties, delivering added value to users.

3. Communications & Data Management

The cloud plays a vital role by rationalizing and optimizing machine-to-machine communications and making access across interfaces easier. Moreover, with interactions multiplying between a growing number of devices and the vast data volumes they generate, the cloud is how organizations can cut the cost of storing, processing, and accessing data in their IoT solutions. Going further, it lets them scale to handle peak demand, or expand the infrastructure required, each time they add a new capability.

4. Security

First, cloud providers can perform routine software and firmware updates with ease. These updates can be signed with digital certificates that assure users they are safe and legitimate.

Second, the cloud enables custom client-side and server-side encryption, protecting as much data as possible as it flows through the IoT ecosystem and storing it in databases at rest. Many cloud providers also offer year-round 24×7 monitoring, reducing the risk of a serious security breach.

Thingplus 2.0, a Cloud-Based IoT Platform Delivered as SaaS

Creating, collecting, integrating, analyzing, and applying data, Thingplus is an IoT service platform delivered as SaaS (Software as a Service).
