The Korean market that year stood at only about KRW 69 billion, a level that does not yet compare with leading countries. However, the domestic market is expected to grow rapidly at an average annual rate of around 70%, making systematic development an urgent priority. Major countries such as the UK (National Digital Twin Programme) and Singapore (Virtual Singapore Project) have designated the digital twin as a key technology that will determine future national competitiveness and are pursuing concrete growth strategies.

With that in mind, let’s take a look at what digital twins are and the benefits they can deliver.

What is a digital twin?

A digital twin is a software system that virtualizes real-world objects, systems, and environments identically in a virtual space, simulates the dynamic behavior and resulting changes of the physical objects and systems in software, applies the optimal state derived from those simulations back to the physical system, and feeds changes in the physical system back into the virtual one—creating a continuous cycle of adaptation and optimization.

Structure of a digital twin / Source: Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport

In short, it is a digital representation of a physical object or system. The technology behind digital twins has expanded to buildings, factories, and even cities, and the concept keeps broadening with the claim that people and processes can have digital twins as well. The concept first originated at NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration), which built full-scale mock-ups of early space capsules to diagnose orbital problems from the ground—mock-ups that were eventually replaced by fully digital simulations.

Essentially, a digital twin is a computer program that takes real-world data about a physical object or system as input and produces output that predicts or simulates how that object or system will be affected by those inputs.

How is it different from a simulation?

The terms simulation and digital twin are sometimes used interchangeably, but they are different technologies. A simulation is designed with a CAD system or a similar platform. You can follow the simulated process as designed, but it is not connected one-to-one with an actual physical object. A digital twin, on the other hand, is built on input from IoT sensors on real equipment, which means it replicates the real system and then changes along with it over time.

Simulations tend to be used in the design phase of the product lifecycle to predict how a future product will behave, while digital twins provide insight into the current behavior of products or systems already in use, across the business.

Comparison with CPS

The digital twin evolved independently in manufacturing, while CPS evolved in the embedded systems field.

The basic concept of the digital twin was introduced in 2002, and around 2006 the term cyber-physical system (CPS) emerged in embedded systems as a concept equivalent to the digital twin. Since the US President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) declared CPS a national priority in 2007, CPS has been applied across many fields that use embedded systems. The vision of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, which originated in Germany to drive manufacturing innovation, even places CPS among its core enabling technologies.

In essence, the two are the same kind of technology, pursuing the same purpose, the same substance, and the same outcomes. Because they share the same fundamental concept, it is most reasonable to describe the digital twin and CPS as different names for the same idea.

Scale and types of digital twins

Conceptually, a digital twin can be applied to anything that exists in the real world. For example, for the parts that make up a machine there can be a part-level digital twin; when those parts are assembled into a machine tool, a digital twin of that machine; when several machine tools combine to form a manufacturing system, a system-level digital twin; and when multiple manufacturing systems combine into a production line that turns staged manufacturing flows into finished goods, a manufacturing-process digital twin.

This can be extended further to the factory level and, by linking multiple factories, to the company level. The scale of a digital twin can also rise to the level of a city or nation whose operations, maintenance, and performance are managed, and a digital twin city can be part of the roadmap. Because step-by-step aggregation is possible—from individual parts, to equipment combining multiple parts, to systems combining multiple pieces of equipment, to processes combining multiple systems, to buildings and factories combining multiple processes, and on to companies, cities, and nations—the scope of an integrated digital twin must be decided.

The question of digital twin scale is a boundary problem—the limits people must consider when analyzing and designing a target—so you need to clarify the purpose of modeling the target and how it will be used, and set design boundaries that match. For example, a bolt used in assembling a machine tool may need to be included in the management scope because it can cause quality problems and failures in production if it loosens, whereas objects that change only over many years offer little modeling value and can be excluded. Boundaries should therefore be set carefully according to the goals you want to achieve.

How are digital twins classified?

IBM proposes classifying digital twins by complexity rather than by industry. This taxonomy offers a useful way to think about the requirements of a given use case and shows the range of what digital twins can do.

– A component/part twin simulates the smallest functioning unit.

– An asset twin simulates two or more components working together and is used to study the interaction between the two components.

– A system/unit twin lets you see how multiple system assets work together, such as simulating an entire production line.

– A process twin provides the top-level view of systems working in concert, letting you examine how an entire factory operates.

Note that adding more components increases complexity. Mixing components from different manufacturers can be especially difficult, because collaborating well in the digital twin world requires the intellectual property of every manufacturer involved.

Digital twins and IoT

The digital twin is not a new concept at all. So why the sudden attention? Because IoT has given digital twins new value. The explosive growth of IoT sensors is the driving force making digital twins a reality. As IoT devices improve, smaller and less complex objects can be included in digital twin scenarios, delivering additional benefits to businesses.

Going further with AI

Once IoT, acting as the senses, collects information and feeds it into a true-to-life digital twin, AI can be trained through simulation in the digital twin environment to derive optimization strategies. The results can be delivered in the form of actionable intelligence, or AI can apply them automatically. Actionable intelligence means suggestive information that can guide people toward more rational actions.

Where earlier digital twins simply provided a virtual environment, their role has expanded further to delivering optimal outcomes. Digital twins are also used to predict other results based on variable data—much like the simulation scenarios familiar from science-fiction films, proving out possible scenarios in a digital environment. With additional investment in software and data analytics, you can optimize IoT deployments to maximize efficiency and understand where to place things and how to operate them before designers deploy them physically.

The more often a digital twin replicates its physical counterpart, the greater the chance of finding efficiencies and other benefits. For example, on a highly instrumented manufacturing floor, a digital twin can simulate how devices perform over time, helping predict future performance and potential failures.

The digital twin society of the future: an autonomous city / Source: ETRI

Expected benefits of adopting a digital twin

Strategic benefits

Making digital transformation visible : Digital transformation can change everything—business practices, execution frameworks, informatization, intelligence, autonomous operation—triggering a shift in thinking, and the digital twin can serve as the medium that makes these changes and transitions visible to users.

Inspiration for process transformation : The digital twin’s mirror-image twin model can inspire innovative change in work procedures, execution frameworks, behavioral models, and personalized services.

Business benefits

Product/service visualization : When delivering products and services to customers, visualizing them as mirror-image twin models gives customers convenience and familiarity in use.

More efficient supply and delivery connections : Visualizing the supply chain’s operating structure as a mirror-image twin model helps you grasp current status and respond intuitively and quickly.

Improved product traceability : By tracking how products and services are used and managed by consumers, the mirror-image twin model makes quality improvement efforts intuitive and supports finding alternatives through simulation.

More efficient system integration : In system integration, where mutual dependencies must be managed effectively, the mirror-image twin model helps streamline configuration design and integrated operations.

Operational benefits

More efficient product design : Real-world data can be used to run product design simulations, making product design more efficient.

Predictive maintenance : By continuously monitoring the operating state of the physical system and detecting states that deviate from the normal behavioral model, you can take corrective action before problems occur.

Real-time monitoring and proactive control : While predictive maintenance supports proactive measures against gradual change, real-time monitoring and proactive control support emergency responses to sudden state changes through the behavioral model and simulation capabilities.

Improved maintenance efficiency : When maintaining complex systems, providing workers with information through the digital twin aids intuitive understanding and delivers maintenance data, repair procedures, and other supporting information services.

Process optimization : Because the system’s behavioral model exists as a digital twin, simulations can be run under different conditions, supporting optimized operation through comparison with actual operating states.

Root cause analysis : Using data on the system’s operating state, problems that have already occurred can be replayed in simulation, enabling root cause analysis.

Multi-party decision-making : Federated digital twins make it easier to identify the causes of shared or complex problems, analyze interdependencies and side effects across industry domains, and support collaboration among stakeholders across the industrial ecosystem.

✅ References

Intelligent Information Technology Trends, “Digital Twin Concepts, Technologies, and Use Cases by Industry”

“Convergence Beyond Manufacturing”: The A to Z of Digital Twins

“Combining Modeling with Real Data”: How Digital Twins Change Reality

What Is a ‘Digital Twin’?
