\nAt 4 p.m. on a Friday, the quiet office suddenly came alive.
\nIt was TGIF (Thank God it’s Friday!) time at Daliworks. Employees gathered in small groups and pulled beers from the refrigerator in the office.<\/p>\n

\"Daliworks<\/p>\n

“Every week over a beer, we talk casually about internet services or technologies we came across that week,” said Soonho Lee, president of Daliworks. “Sometimes we go out to a cafe for coffee, or take a walk up Namsan near the office.”<\/p>\n

This is the distinctive corporate culture of Daliworks, an Internet of Things (IoT) platform company. Daliworks does not track when employees come and go, and staff can take vacation whenever they like. But it is not all freedom. Every two weeks, Daliworks holds a demo day for the work done so far. Everyone shares how, and how much of, their goals they have achieved and receives feedback. The company also holds its own technical seminars regularly.<\/p>\n

The hiring process is demanding as well. After a technical interview, candidates go through a personality interview and then another technical interview lasting two to three hours. Because Daliworks is a company built on systems rather than one growing around creative ideas or services, it considers engineering experience and competence more important than anything else. When President Lee decided to build a cloud platform company for IoT services, he sought out skilled engineers around him and persuaded them one by one \u2014 driven by his firm goal of founding a technology venture.<\/p>\n

For Lee, who had experienced one failed startup in 1998 during his doctoral program at POSTECH, this venture had to be more determined and better prepared. In March 2013, four engineers, including Lee, came together.<\/p>\n

“All employees call each other ‘PD,’ with no ranks or titles,” Lee said. “PD stands for product developer\/designer.” Daliworks has invested most heavily in an egalitarian, free-spirited development culture, modeling itself on Netflix, a leading example of innovative corporate culture.<\/p>\n

Lee saw it as a problem that small and midsize Korean software companies fail to grow because they are consumed by one-off outsourced development (SI), also called solution licensing. Daliworks, though a small software company just past its second year, does no outsourced development at all.<\/p>\n

Daliworks develops and operates its own cloud platform, Thingplus (Thing+)<\/a>. It analyzes data collected in real time from IoT sensors installed in customers’ factories and stores, and displays the results on PC or tablet dashboards. Users can monitor everything in real time, from temperature and humidity changes at an ice cream factory or a mushroom farm to vaccine equipment monitoring and in-store air quality measurement.<\/p>\n

Daliworks made the service affordable: small businesses and stores can use it for 10,000 won a month, without investing tens of millions of won in development costs. In entering the global business-to-business (B2B) market, including participation in overseas exhibitions, mentor Jaeman Lee, former CEO of C-Motech, was a great help. Now, overseas companies recognize the company’s capabilities and reach out first.<\/p>\n

“Our goal is to be the IoT company that is easy and convenient to use,” Lee said. “We will become a global software company active in overseas markets.”<\/p>\n
