Korea is accelerating its transition to an eco-friendly, low-carbon economy through initiatives such as the ‘Renewable Energy 3020 Implementation Plan’ and the ‘Korean New Deal’, and major companies at home and abroad are joining RE100 (Renewable Energy 100), a campaign to source 100% of the electricity they use from renewables.

Furthermore, under the 5th Basic Plan for Renewable Energy Technology Development, Use, and Deployment established in December 2020, the government has set a target of dramatically expanding solar power capacity from 8.1GW in 2018 to 49.8GW by 2034. Solar power’s share of total generation is expected to rise sharply, helped along by continually falling panel prices. Against this backdrop, solar power systems have so far spread mainly across farmland and mountainous areas, and demand for solar power is projected to grow even faster on the back of various growth drivers, including ESG.

About Solar Power

Solar power generation uses photovoltaic equipment that converts sunlight into electricity. Power is generated through the photoelectric effect, in which sunlight striking the solar modules produces electricity. The electricity generated is sold to the Korea Power Exchange or, under the RPS, sold through regular bidding contracts to generation subsidiaries, private power companies, the Korea Water Resources Corporation, and the Korea District Heating Corporation. (With the introduction of the RPS, power producers with capacity of 500,000 kW (500MW) or more are obligated to supply at least a certain share of their total generation from new and renewable energy.)

The government aims to raise the share of renewable energy in power generation from 8.08% in 2017 (Korea Energy Agency, 2017 New and Renewable Energy Statistics) to 20% by 2030. Domestic solar installations hit a record high in the first half of 2021 and are growing quickly on the strength of the government’s aggressive deployment policies.

Advantages

1. Eco-Friendliness

Solar is in many ways more environmentally friendly than other generation methods. It causes almost no environmental damage, such as air pollution, while generating. It is not entirely free of environmental controversy over manufacturing and disposal, but it is unquestionably a renewable energy source.

2. Low Maintenance Costs

With few components that need servicing, upkeep is inexpensive. Compared with conventional large-scale power plants, solar systems are modular by component, so faults are easy to fix — and above all, with no moving mechanical parts at all, there is no wear-related maintenance.

3. High Energy Output per Unit Area

Among renewables, solar sits at the top. Its energy output per unit area is 4 times that of wind power and 20 times that of biomass. Output per unit area matters especially in Korea, which has one of the world’s highest population densities and, as an advanced economy, high per-capita energy consumption. Under these conditions, solar is currently the only realistic way to meet all energy demand with renewables.

4. Power Generation Open to Private Operators

Among renewable energy options, solar is the most accessible to ordinary people. It faces fewer site constraints than other forms of generation. Because it is highly modular, capacity can be scaled down or up with relative ease, and it can be used in a wide range of situations and locations. Another decisive factor is safety: the risk of accidents converges on virtually zero. For these reasons, solar spread relatively quickly to remote islands where power supply is difficult, and it is now expanding into ordinary homes with the help of subsidies.

Profitability

With real estate becoming less attractive as an investment, solar power is seen as a promising new alternative. It offers stable income through KEPCO and the Korea Power Exchange, and it is also expected to contribute to the broader social good of advancing the renewable energy framework.

Solar output depends heavily on weather conditions and is difficult to control artificially, so connecting it to the existing grid can reduce the grid’s reliability and stability. For this reason, accurately forecasting solar power output is becoming ever more important for stable grid operation and profitability.

What Happens When You Add an AIoT Platform-Based EMS to Solar Power?

A system for AI-based generation forecasting and equipment diagnostics

The Thingplus solar power monitoring service is an integrated system built on an AIoT cloud platform for the efficient operation of solar power facilities. It predicts solar power output through AI analysis and provides real-time monitoring, including preventive maintenance for generation equipment. This allows solar power operators to cut operating and management costs and improve profitability. With real-time equipment monitoring and a remote control system in place, operators can check the operating status and data of their solar facilities in real time and manage them from a distance through system settings and remote control functions.

Key Features

Thingplus hopes to contribute to the spread of renewable energy by supporting the efficient management of small and mid-sized solar power facilities.
